Winter Woes: Dry Skin

I know that it's been a tremendously long time since I've written a "tips" post. Those of you who know me well, know that time has been a great factor in this. To my readers: I apologize!

I will say, though- due to the fact that I've kept you waiting, I am going to do a post on resolving dry skin issues. I hate to do it, because of course- you should simply buy a Shea butter bath bomb from me- or a sugar scrub to resolve these matters (a little shameless self-promotion)... You know me better than that- I'll freely give you the tips!

Dry skin is pretty prominent this time of year- we've been "cooped up" in our homes, cars, offices- subjected to the brutalities of forced air heat, and winter wind that drys a chafes skin. It is crying out for you to take care of it! I have some natural remedies that'll give you a more softer, happier you, (I can't promise on the happier, your skin will be though)....

Ideas-you should have most these things on hand:

Dry elbows? I get these in the winter, can't stand it! Solution: mix baking soda with lemon juice, making a consistency of paste- rub it into the skin of the elbow area. (Allow this to set about 2-5 minutes too, if you want to lighten any darker elbow skin) After you're done, rinse, and follow up with some moisturizing lotion.

Another aid for the elbows, (and hands -n- knees), is to use crunchy peanut butter to exfoliate and moisturize these dry/rough areas. Simply rub into skin at suggested areas, allow to set for about 2 minutes, then wipe clean with paper towels. You may smell like Mr. Peanut (tm), but you'll be oh so soft! There are worse smells...

Dry hands? Apply sunscreen- it moisturizes and also protects it from windburn! Another solution: apply cornstarch as you would hand lotion to soften dry hands. Of course- soaking hands in warm water for 5 minutes, and following it up with a dab of vegetable shortening will seal in moisture. Here's a real fun one! Take a cup of Cheerios (tm), grind it in the blender until it becomes a fine powder-pour into a large bowl. Rub the powder over your hands to exfoliate dry skin, wash with cool water- dry well, seal with a protective moisturizer.

Whole body screamin', "Bring on some hydration!"? Solution: massage butter into your skin, (I would avoid the face!), wait 15 minutes, (I suggest not running around at this point...)- wipe excess off with paper towels, then take a hot bath. Follow up with a protective moisturizer, like Lubriderm (tm).

In a hurry? A VERY LIGHT spray -n- rub with cooking spray is a great, natural moisturizer.

There are just so many more!

Oh, but only 1 more before the end of this post!

Your face: We didn't cover that! You can rub lip balm on your face to protect it from windburn on any occasion that you intend to be out in the harsh conditions for a period of time. Also- not necessarily at the same time, or together, for that matter: you can always apply a dab (small!) on the lines around your eyes, (if you're "experienced" enough to have them...)- to moisturize that delicate skin area.

Hint: Most household oils are natural moisturizers, and if used: they should be left on for a period of time, and then wiped off- followed by a bath or hot shower, and sealed with a moisturizer.

Another hint: If you feel irritation from something- don't use it! Take it off your skin, and wash off! If irritation continues- see a health care professional!

Fluffy White Flakes Falling Not Just From The Sky- But Your Head?

The necessary staple for the gal throughout the holiday season- the black dress. Festive Christmas apparel also tends to come in the form of bright red blouses. In fact, most winter weather clothing is dark and a brilliant background for a condition we would much rather NOT have! Guess what it is? Sure you have: dandruff!

Fortunately for you, I have a small assortment of household remedies that will keep their eyes off your shoulders- and on that pretty little face, where they belong!

They are all treatments that are used throughout the rinse/washing process of the hair, as dandruff is a condition of the scalp. In the winter months, when people tend to use alot of dry air in which to heat themselves- the accumulation of dead skin cells is more likely, (this is truly "dry scalp, rather than actual dandruff). Excessive flaking is sometimes caused by a fungus that is related to Athletes Foot, (called Tinea capitis- yeah, Latin for: Dandruff, basically).

The treatments that I will lay out for you will aid with either condition.

Here are some tried and true ways to stave away some embarrassing moments:

Massage lemon juice into your scalp, leave on about 2 minutes. Rinse your head with water- then rinse again with 1 teaspoon lemon juice/cup of water. This should be done daily until the flakes, "flake away"...
Take two heaping teaspoons of thyme leaves to 1 cup of water and boil for ten minutes. Strain the solution (carefully), through a coffee filter, and into a bowl. Allow to cool (*Very Important!). Once cooled, pour the solution over your freshly washed damp hair- working vigorously into the scalp. Allow it to dry, there is no need to rinse, simply style as usual. Thyme is a mild antiseptic.
After washing your hair, consider rinsing with mouthwash, (an antiseptic type variety- like Listerine (tm)). Believe it or not, the old bottles used to advertise the usage of the product for this purpose...
Cocktails anyone? Pour a cup of vodka, mixed with crushed rosemary (2 teaspoons), place in an airtight container- allowing it to sit for 2 days.... Go on about your business, no need to wait for it to "cure". :-) After the time has come, strain the mixture through a coffee filter. Massage this into your scalp- allowing it to dry.
Vinegar- the stuff is just simply good to have around! Anyway, it also finds it's spot in this post: as a rinse. Shampoo your hair, rinsing it with vinegar. Vinegar kills bacteria, soothes the scalp, and is great for removing excess build up from hair styling products. It also makes your hair super shiny! Don't believe me? Try it!!! The vinegar smell dissipates quickly, don't fret!
Get to the refrigerator: pull out the good ole yogurt. After washing your hair, apply a generous amount of yogurt (I'd personally stick with the "plain", non-flavored variety if I were you...). Wrap your hair in a towel, and allow to set for twenty minutes. Simply rinse clean following the procedure. Kind of like a day at the spa!

Dandruff is a condition, and although it can be embarrassing- it's not shameful! Treat it as you would any other skin condition, and you will be amazed at the results! You can thank me later... LOL

No more cringing to the song, "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas", or "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow"... Smile- it makes life so much more pleasant, and it's contagious! :-)

Got Animals?

I do, and I realize the amount of things that can happen when dealing with pets. There are so many things that you encounter when caring for your pets. I thought I'd offer some tips on how to alleviate, or control some of the problems that we run across...

Does the dog stink? Not smelling "oh so fresh" in the household as a result? Here are a couple of ways in which to resolve the problem:

Wash your dog...

Just kidding! But honestly, wash it with dry powdered milk. Add 2 tablespoons of nonfat dry milk to the bathwater to neutralize bad smells and soften the dog's coat.

A nice vinegar rinse will work to balance the PH also, neutralizing odors. The vinegar smell will dissipate rather quickly.

In a pinch, you can use the following methods:

Sprinkle some baking soda on the pet, work it in- then brush it off. Another method is to wipe down "wet smelly dog" with fabric softener sheets, making them "springtime fresh", or "waterfall clean", (you get the point)...

Have a "white dog gone brown" (or variations of this color)? Use liquid bluing to whiten pets fur. Simply add a couple of drops to the rinse water after bathing.

Keep your dogs eyes safe when bathing, by always inserting drops of mineral oil prior to bathing!

Other issues:

Coprophagy, (in other words: does your dog eat it's own poop?). Use Accent Flavor Enhancer (tm) from your grocery store. Or if available, simply MSG (mono sodium glutamate).

Flea problem? Sprinkle garlic powder on the dog's food every day. Another thing you can do is to add a few drops of Dawn (tm) dishwashing detergent to the shampoo that you are washing your dog with. Rinse thoroughly! Also, try rinsing the animal with 2 ounces of Skin So Soft (tm)/gallon of water, this will repel fleas and ticks- as well as give your dog a shiny happy coat!

Cat coughing up strange fuzzy things (hairballs)? There are a couple of things that you can do to assist in at least the reduction of this yucky thing...

Put a teaspoon of corn oil in the cat's food once a week. This will help the hair pass through the digestive system of said cat- preventing hairballs.

You can also apply a dab of petroleum jelly to the cat's nose. I know this sound strange, but the cat will lick it off- thus lubricating the hair, allowing it to pass through the digestive system.

Last but not least: rub a bit of Alberto VO5 Conditioner (tm), (cheap, non-toxic and natural), to the cat's fur. It is okay if the cat licks it's fur, it will be safe.

Your pet will thank you for thinking of their needs and taking good care of them! Though the cat will tell you in many ways, (cats can make more than 100 vocal sounds), and the dog will say it too, but simply in one language, (they are limited to approximately 10 sounds)!

Wash Your Hands! Home Remedies...

You've used the soap- but you're still plagued with "stinky hands"... You have kids with "Kool-Aid (tm) Smiles", been on a "finger painting fiasco", or you dipped your hands in the food coloring while making those wonderful Christmas cookies- we can get you "spiffy" in no time at all, here are some home solutions!

You don't want those nasty odors lingering... If you're somewhere near a kitchen, all hope is not lost. Plain water doesn't "cut it". Instead, use one of the following methods:

Salt: wet your hands and rub 1 teaspoon of salt between your hands, concentrating on fingernails & tips of fingers.

You can also use lemon: Simply rub the citrus juice on your skin, then rinse with water.

Another method is white vinegar: pour some on your hands, and rub them together well, then rinse. The vinegar scent will dissipate rather quickly, don't worry!

You could use baking soda: rub the powder all over your hands, then rinse.

Baking Christmas cookies is all fun, festive, and; well, quite messy! Use a dab of toothpaste, (not gel) to remove the lovely "palette" from your hands, (and arms, legs, etc.- if you've gotten into it that "deep")! This also works for the child's "Kool-Aid (tm) smile".

Paint and grease- but no Gojo (tm) (and not harsh like turpentine or acetone)? Try these alternate supplies:

Cooking spray: spray your hands, rub- then wash with soap and water. Your hands will be both cleaned and moisturized!

Vegetable oil and dish soap: use equal amounts of vegetable oil and dish soap into your cupped palm, scrub hands with mixture, then rinse with water. This will clean your hands, cleanse the pores, and leave hands moist and soft.

Mayonnaise or salad dressing (like Miracle Whip (tm)): do the same with it- basically the same result as the cooking spray.

Olive oil and salt or sugar: works as a scrub, for beautiful soft hands- great exfoliation!

Butter: Popcorn smelling hands! Take and place a teaspoon from the tub, or a slice from the stick, rub into hands- then wash with soap and water.

Baby Oil: do the same, expect the same results- but you wont smell like popcorn, rather like a baby's butt!

WD-40 (tm): spray some on- wipe hands clean with paper towel, then wash thoroughly with soap and water. (I doubt you'll find this item in the pantry, unless you're at a "bachelor pad"...).

That's it!

Oh, a soap "fast fact" for you: the first soap was made around 600 BC! The Phoenicians introduced it to the Romans and Greeks- but they didn't give them antibacterial gel. Keep some with you- it's cold and flu season!

Here are some alternative ways to clean that toilet!

Yeah, I know, I amaze even myself some of the things I will post about...

Okay, here's the "scoop"!

Did you know... You can clean your toilet with:

Coca Cola? Yeah, strange huh? They say to pour a can of Coca Cola into your toilet, allow it to set for an hour, brush, & flush! Who would have guessed? Such a versatile beverage, wouldn't you say?

Lemonade, (powdered mix): Two tablespoons into toilet, brush well- allow to set for an hour-brush again and flush. Clean & lemony fresh!

Alka-Seltzer tm): Two tablets dropped into toilet, allow to sit for twenty minutes- brush & flush.

Mouthwash: 1/4 cup poured into toilet- allow to sit for 30 minutes, brush and flush, disinfects too!

Kool Aid (tm): Any flavor, even Tutti-Fruity! Empty complete packet- scrub, & flush clean.

Gatorade (tm): 2 cups Gatorade poured into toilet bowl- allow to sit for 1 hour, brush and flush clean.

Dishwasher Detergent Powder: 1 teaspoon in toilet- brush well, allow to sit for 10 minutes, brush again & flush. This one is a real money saver!

Orange Powdered Drink Mix: 2 tablespoons in the toilet- wait 15 minutes, brush and flush.

White vinegar: 1 cup white vinegar into toilet- allow to set 10 minutes- flush. Notice this one wasn't "brush & flush"... Cheap too!

Denture cleaner: Two tablets into the toilet- allow to set for 5 minutes, scrub and flush.

And, when all is said and done...

Baby wipes: to wipe down rim, outer bowl, top and bottom of toilet....

Sparkly twinkly! Yay! :-)

Home Remedies: Cold & Flu Season

I found alot of different unusual things to use to treat the symptoms of the flu! With it being cold and flue season, I thought they were certainly worth sharing!

Warning: some of these are extremely strange! LOL

Congestion:

Yellow Mustard: apply a generous amount of the mustard onto the chest area- cover with a wrung out wash clothe (dampened with warm water). This makes an old-fashioned mustard plaster that relieves chest congestion! Who knew? Hmmm: Don't try this with Ketchup...! :-)
Coffee: Sipping a cup of hot, black coffee through a straw helps relieve chest congestion....
Chicken Noodle soup: Sipping a warm mug of chicken noodle soup will clear nasal passages, while providing re hydration & re-energizing the body with essential salts, (the re-energizing part accomplished through the salt only applies to chicken noodle soup made with garlic salt- or purchased canned soup, which has alot of salt in it.). The home made soup with garlic and salt would be a much better choice- as garlic is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic.
Salt/for nasal congestion: Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon salt in 1 cup of warm water- insert a straw into the liquid (works easier with one that is flexible)- cover the open end with your finger; then insert the straw into the nostril, inhaling the liquid. Repeat several times, then blow your nose thoroughly.
Peppermint: You can do this via sucking on peppermints, using peppermint extract topically (or in the bath tub), even eating a peppermint patty! Mmmm...
Tomato juice & Tabasco (tm), (sounds like a Bloody Mary... almost): Take about 15 drops of the pepper sauce in a glass of tomato juice- drink it. Do this several times daily to help relieve congestion in the sinuses & lungs. You can also gargle w/10-20 of the pepper sauce- mix in a glass of water- this clears the respiratory tract.

Achy Muscles:

Bathing with Alka-Seltzer (tm): fill the tub with six Alka-Seltzer tablets- lay back and enjoy! Do not use this method if you are allergic to aspirin, as it is the main ingredient in Alka-Seltzer (tm).
Bathing in baking soda and Epsom salts, soothes those sore, tired muscles.
Olive oil and horseradish: 1 tablespoon of horseradish and 1/2 cup olive oil rubbed/massaged into the body assists in the achy muscles , as well as relieves congestion.
Tennis balls: take about 3 or 4 tennis balls and place in tube sock, tying the end, have someone you love roll this over your back (they use this technique to massage the backs of some women while in labor).

Ouch-nose hurt from too much rubbing and blowing? Try using petroleum jelly or chap stick, un-colored & unflavored). Apply to area that hurts.

Sore Throat:

Hard candy will help in moisturizing your throat, any flavor, and even sugar-free!
Sucking on a Popsicle (tm) will ease the throat as well, immediate relief- followed by coating of the throat and energy from the sugars in it.
Apple cider vinegar and honey mixed at the same parts, make a bit so you can use throughout the day (example: 1/3 cup to 1/3 cup), Take 1 tablespoon 6 times daily. the vinegar kills the bacteria and the honey soothes your throat.
Gargle with salt water, (not the same mixture that you used for your nostrils... ewww...).

Fever:

Apply vodka to the forehead, chest & back as a liniment (this one you can do while taking the tomato juice/Tabasco (tm) tonic- you ARE a Bloody Mary!! LOL)
Ice Pack
Bath with lukewarm/slightly cool water.

Things to know about the flu:

The flu is never associated with sneezing. A running nose, sore throat & sneezing are symptoms of a cold.
A flu has headache, hacking cough, fatigue (extreme), & muscle aches. These symptoms generally do not accompany a cold.
Surviving 1 type of flue, or being vaccinated for 1 type only makes you immune to that particular strain of the flu. All other types you are still susceptible to.
Antibiotics do nothing for the flu- the flu is a virus.
The common cold usually lasts longer than the flu.

Hope these tips/tricks help you this season. I thought about this post because my poor, loving husband is suffering with the flu currently... It's 'going around' pretty heavily this year. Keep washing your hands, and take care!

Having a Bad Hair Day... ? Bad Hair Life?

Evidently, this long-awaited post is about hair! I know, it was really hard to guess that!

I am going to address some of the hair problems/dilemmas that we face, and some home-based resolutions for them.

They say that 90% of baldness can be attributed to genetics, it's hereditary. Do I have a "cure" for that? Well, I'm not sure, I have a solution that I have taken note of- though do not know of anyone who has tried it... You may get a "stinky head", but:

It has been said that if you take a garlic clove- slice it open & rub it on the bald area; then, in about an hour, massage your scalp with olive oil, put on a shower cap and go to bed for the night with it on, (don't forget to shampoo in the morning!)- it can work. You must do this everyday consistently, and they say that new growth should be seen in as little as a few weeks, & that additional hair will stop falling out! Hmmm... Sounds like it would be worth trying to alot of people, I know alot of them try soooo many other methods: hair plugs, etc.

Looking to make that head of your's a bit more "sparkly-twinkly"? Here are a couple tips for dull hair:

Rinse with vinegar after shampooing- it takes the build up out, and makes your hair shine, (I do this one on occasion...).
Brunette's alternate method: make a rinse in a glass bowl: adding 3 tablespoons of parsley, rosemary, or sage; and about 8 cups of boiling water. Tip, let it cool... Strain through muslin or a very fine strainer. You can keep the unused for another time. After you shampoo your hair, massage the herb water into your scalp, then rinse. Mmmm, good enough to eat!
Blonde's alternate method: your rinse is simply chamomile (3 tablespoons) to the 8 cups of boiling water. You could also use chamomile tea bags from the grocery store, and not have to strain mixture... If you choose to get your chamomile from the health store, you will have to strain it the same way as the previous rinse. Applied the same as well. Should be calming, hopefully, if you do this in the A.M., it doesn't make you want to go back to bed!

Revitalize that hair! If your hair needs a "pick me up", avoid the salon's money hungry racks! Here is a great way to do this at home:

Take 1/2 cup olive oil, some essential oil, (just a couple drops of your desired scent), "suck it up" into an eye-dropper, apply to your hair & massage into the scalp. You can warm it if desired, I think it would make it very soothing... Once you are done, shampoo very well, until all the oil is washed out.

Last, but not least: gray hair... No guarantee- but they are said to work!

Take B Complex daily, they say in a couple months it will restore hair back to it's original color... Sounds too good to be true, but, worth trying. The B Complex is good for you anyway!
Elixir: Take a glass of water, mix 2 tablespoons each of: raw honey (room temperature), apple cider vinegar, & blackstrap molasses. Drink first thing in the morning everyday. I don't know about the duration in which it takes to get results on this one- but they say that it will give you energy too!
Scalp tonic: combine ginger root juice & ground cloves, massage into the scalp. Time for results- no clue, but it sound invigorating!

Well. I know it's been quite some time since I last offered a tip, trick, remedy, or solution; but- that will be it for today! Wishing you many more "good hair days"!

Handmade Christmas Shopping- a Gift in Itself!

With Christmas approaching, I can't wait to begin my Christmas shopping!

We are currently in the process of moving, and will be in the new house in 23 days... So, while I haven't bought any items that I will have to move, thus delaying my Christmas shopping experience- I've begun the process of "window shopping"...

All of my gifts will be handmade. Whether by myself or other fine artisans that are a couple clicks away- no matter what side of the world they live & create in. The possibilities are endless! This year I have people in mind that I would like to purchase some of the mixed media/altered art that is offered, as it is unique, and really shows endless creativity & talent! The pieces are generally one of a kind, & that is what I would like to present to some of the people on my guest list that are skeptic about buying "handmade".

Some of the gifts, I have made; or will be making for my gift list. Though, as time runs out, and I am busy creating seasonal gifts for my shops- I am fortunate to have the opportunity do dive into another artisan's mind. The beauty of it is, like me, they took the time to create it with their own two hands; giving much attention to detail, knowing that someone will be on the receiving end of their talented work.

The level of service I've found with purchasing handmade gifts direct from the person who creates them is also something that I have yet, in my many years of shopping, found with any department store on Earth- no matter how exclusive the store is.

I shop handmade, and I encourage others to do the same. You will be amazed by the quality & personal service, that has been long gone from the stores in our time. You'll also find pleasure in the remarkable smile from the receiver- who was expecting something completely different than the gift held in his or her hands. Comforting also, is the fact that you supported an individual, or individuals in their quest to bring you the best- rather than the mass- produced company that only looks to quantity of items sold. And Her Skin Was Like Porcelian...

Is beauty only skin deep? Of course not! However- today's topic is regarding the caring for of your skin & how to keep it happy, as well as resolving problems that have already occurred...

Acne: it's not a "lovable" situation. Washing your face with soap (gentle) & water are the best preventative measures- though sometimes it can occur anyway. Some methods that you can try at home that will be alot less costly than their drug store "counterparts":

Blend the heck out of uncooked oatmeal, (or use colloidal oatmeal from the drug store- available in the store brand too! Generally in the bathing section: it is used to calm skin irritation, like hives & poison ivy, etc.), take these oats, and blend; if using whole oats, stir if using the store colloidal oatmeal- with enough water to just form a paste. apply to entire face- not in your eyes... Allow this mixture to dry on your skin, ignore the itchy, tight, dried-up feeling you are having; and keep it in place until it is completely dry and begins to crumble off. You may now proceed to wash with warm water. It makes your skin sooo soft. Bonus: it makes a great bath too, even when you don't have a skin malady, it really makes you baby soft- the only drawback: cleaning the tub afterward, it's not "clean tub" friendly...
Here's a night time remedy that I'm sure you wont be in a hurry to try, but- what the heck; if it works, do it! About 3 1/2-4 hours before you "hit the hay", steep about a cup of mashed up strawberries, (without the whipped cream!), in 2 cups of distilled white vinegar. Allow this yummy mixture to steep the entire time before you go to bed! Strain the pulp (just pour it into a colander, with a bowl beneath it), then massage the mixture on your face- sleep well! Oh, what about your pillow case? Is that what I missed? LOL... The liquid dries on your face quite rapidly. If your not into sprinting to your bed (it can handle a brisk walk), it'll dry before your head hits the pillow! Wash it off with cool water in the morning- it's a great cleanser & astringent.

Acne scars, nobody wants them... Are you too late? Should you go and buy all these "guaranteed to make you look like this: {airbrushed, smiling model on package...}? Perhaps some expensive cosmetic procedure is the answer? Very expensive- but, hey, if you're into spending money... But, for those of us that aren't, there's resolution that wont suck the money clean out of your wallet:

Take 1 teaspoon of nutmeg, & a teaspoon of honey (sounds like ingredients in some of the Autumn/Fall recipes, huh?) and apply it to the scar. Wash off with cool water in about 20 minutes. Repeat twice a week. Improvement should occur withen a couple months. It's not as quick as the cosmetic procedure, though it is safer & alot more "bang for your buck". As far as the store bought potions- same results, in the same amount of time... How can you go wrong?

Well, that's the skin-ny on acne care... I know, not too funny- but, hey: I try! Going to put into use any of these ideas? Keep me posted!

First of all I would like to start this post off by thanking Reggie for giving me special permission to post this discussion. Reggie is a total sweetheart and is allowing me to tell you about a very special fundraiser my husband and I have been working on.

I have a 10 year old handicap brother who is currently in the hospital. He had some major surgery this past Tuesday morning on his colon. They removed a portion of it and put him on a colostomy bag. My family has been up in Reno for a week now and they aren't sure how long they are going to be staying there.

That's right, today's topic covers everyone reading... We are all aging from the time we are born- it's inevitable.

There are alot of products on the market that claim to "turn back the clock", there is plastic surgery, and there are herbs that do assist in slowing the process- but nothing can change the fact that you are aging. The best advice for reducing the "symptoms" of growing old, is to make some lifestyle changes... The sooner the better, though it's never too late to start!

That's the good news!

So, without further ado, let me begin some recommendations:

Don't:

Drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.
Get some sun- it's good for you to be in some sunlight- but don't sunbathe, or over-expose yourself!

Now that I've been a "party pooper", and you don't want to hear any more, "Don't do this...", let me give you some things you CAN do! In fact I suggest them...

Uh Oh, they must not be any fun...

Do:

Eat a large salad everyday, using broccoli, carrot or celery in it. Switch it up everyday, but the greens (the darker the better) are good for you- and the above mentioned veggies are high in fiber as well. It doesn't have to get boring- there are alot of different vegetables out there, add nuts, or even add some fruit, such as an apple or mandarin oranges!
Introduce nuts or sunflower seeds to your diet on a daily basis, (less than an ounce if your watching your waistline). Brazil nuts are an excellent choice, as they are very high in antioxidants.
Replace one of your meat dishes everyday with a vegetarian dish. Whatever you'd like. My personal favorite is green beans, sliced tomatoes, & corn bread, (I'm also quite fond of cabbage & noodles)...
Add a fruit smoothie to your daily routine- any fruits you care to partake in...
Replace your oil with olive oil.
Go for a 30 minute walk everyday.

See, that wasn't so bad, was it? Well, maybe it was...

It's very difficult to make lifestyle changes- I know! But, if you just take it slowly, incorporating these changes in small steps- they can be done! Even if you make only a couple of the changes, you're sailing in the right direction! Nobody is perfect, certainly not me- but there are things that can help us age more gracefully; and they don't come in a jar, bottle, or via surgical knife. They're all suggestions. Though they just might make a happier, healthier you!

You can cheat once in awhile too- I promise not to tell, & if you stay hushed no one else will know either...

Twelve Weeks of Christmas CAL, by Beansprout Creations!

Beansprout Creations is already thinking about Christmas, (as we all should be...)! Her mission: all handmade ornaments on our Christmas tree, To add a bit of fun, she's turning it into a crochet-along =)

Here’s how it will work: Every week, for 12 weeks leading up to Christmas, She will be posting a new pattern. The goal is to make one every day of the week, so at the end of the 12 weeks you’ll have 7 of each of the 12 ornaments for a total of 84 ornaments!

Am I Giving you a Headache?

Of course I'm not... (maybe I am?!? LOL). Regardless, today I am sharing some useful tips for resolving headaches. If I am though- please: stop reading right where you are! :-)

They say that ginger is a good natural cure for a headache, (typically the migraine type). Reason: it blocks the action of, (are you ready for the $10 word?), prostaglandins; which are the substances in the brain that cause pain & inflammation in blood vessels. It is supposed to be more effective in it's fresh form, rather than powdered, for absorption. Use a garlic press, or grate the actual root. Allow to steep (1 teaspoon/1 cup) in hot water for at least 5 minutes when you feel a migraine a-coming...

Also have heard that raising the serotonin levels in your brain will decrease your chances of getting headaches. Natural ways to do this include increasing the amount of carbohydrates in your diet, with like-minded, high fiber foods, such as: whole grains, dried beans, & vegetables. Though some people may find increased headaches from high carbs- if you are one of them: try adding some high-protein, though lean meats, eggs, or low fat cheeses.

Some other diet changes that are useful:

Avoid chocolate & red wine (I know, that's asking alot, you can try the other methods prior, I wont tell...)
Avoid processed, preserved foods (Are there any other type? Just kidding!)
Stay away from MSG
Take vitamin B6, good for a healthy nervous system! Or take a B-Complex & take care of a variety of issues- more bang for your buck!

Stress can also be a large contributor to headaches- relax! If necessary, learn how to meditate, take a yoga class, get a massage, read, or see an acupuncturist. You can reach for the aspirin, but if you're looking for natural ways to combat your issues- we will be attacking the cause- not just masking the problem! Sound like a plan?

If it's just the person in the cubicle next to you with a big mouth, run- run as fast as you can!

What's up with Flaxseed? What's it all about?

We've all heard of flaxseed these days; seen it at the grocery store, some of us use it- but, really- what's up with it? Why would we choose to incorporate it in our diet?

It has the highest concentration of Omega-3 fatty acids (I know- So? What does that mean?) It has been proven that the deficiency of it in your body is correlated with more than 60 illnesses... (eg. cancer, diabetes, hypertension, immune disorders, and stroke). So, adding it to your daily diet could aid in helping to prevent, improve or reverse these conditions.
It has more lignans than 30 cups of broccoli! What the heck is a lignan? It's a powerful antioxidant that has antiviral, antibacterial, & anti fungal properties. It is even suggested that lignans can prevent alot of health problems- such as: colon cancer, breast cancer, lower cholesterol, regulate menstrual cycles & wipe out menopausal symptoms.
It has as much fiber in 2 tablespoons- as 1 1/2 cups of oatmeal! How's that for "bang for your buck"?

Sound like a good reason to include flaxseed in your diet? It does to me! I recently incorporated it in mine: I just add 2 tablespoons (approx.) of ground flaxseed to a glass of V8 every morning. It's that simple! Pssst... Don't let it set- drink immediately after combining... otherwise you'll need a knife & fork to eat it. It absorbs the liquid- very fast.

Oh- and if you haven't thought about it: obviously, with all the fiber- it's great for giving you that "full" feeling if you are trying to maintain or lose weight...

Go flaxseed- work that magic!!!

Beat the Heat in August

I realize that I've been sooo behind in posting any tips, tricks, remedies, etc..... Sorry!

Today I'd like to touch on tips for resolving issues related to the heat, (figured it would probably be better to give you the tips before the first frost...).

For starters: drink plenty of water! (This is not really an "unknown" resolution, but, merely a reminder). Water is just plain good for you, in so many ways!

Besides being uncomfortable, there are some conditions that can occur as a result of too much time outdoors in the heat of the summer... A couple, besides sunburn & heat stroke- are what I am going to touch on: heat exhaustion, & heat rash.

If possible, avoid being outdoors, (especially doing any major physical activity), during the peak hours of the day's heat during those heated summer days. However, if this is not possible, I have a couple of ways to assist in your comfort.

I have had heat stroke, heat exhaustion, you name it... I am fair skinned, loved the sun, and not too bright when it came to spending my summer days outdoors (unprotected, and sometimes w/baby oil...), seeking that bronze glow; coming up red every time. It was the thing to do when I was a teen, everyone else was doing it. Needless to say, you'll seek comfort in either of these conditions, and medical attention, especially should you end up with heat stroke.

So, to begin with- lets talk preventing heat exhaustion in the first place. Look at vitamin stores for liquid mineral supplements. They can be found at most of the GNC's (c), etc. Find supplements containing magnesium, manganese & calcium. You can find them in tablet form as well- however, they are better absorbed by the body in the liquid form. Follow the instructions on the package for dosage.

Lets say you didn't do that, and ended up with heat exhaustion. Your face is glowing a bright and shiny red, & your head is throbbing like a balloon blown too far, waiting to explode... "Hmmm, wish I would've used those minerals...". You can dissolve 2 tablets of Glonoinum (12C potency), also available at health food/supplement stores- under your tongue every 15 minutes. If not feeling better within the first half hour- see a doctor. However, if you start to feel fine- repeat the same dosage, every 3 to 4 hours for the remainder of the day. You should be fine.

You have little blisters that are really itchy, sometimes referred to as "prickly heat"- these are called heat rash; and it is caused by sweat in your pores becoming stuck in there, and irritating the skin tissue around it. It will go away on it's own- but not for about 3-4 days, which can be quite annoying to say the least, (& not too much fun during the upcoming weekend while everyone else is out, and you're at home itching)...

You can speed up the process! Yay! Really. Take some peppermint oil, (make sure that it is truly peppermint oil, and not a peppermint scented solution), and place about 3 tablespoons to a bathtub of cool water. Another route to take on the same solution, is to wrap about 2 cups of peppermint leaves, (should you have an herb garden), in cheesecloth, and put that in the bathtub. Put your itchy, scratchy little self in the tub and soak for at least 5-10 minutes, repeating as often as needed to eliminate the itching.

Really, if you can- it's best to avoid the sun, and/or heat during peak times of the day. But at least there is relief in sight for those of you who can't, and even for those of us who can, & do it anyway.... By the way, I don't do that anymore- I haven't for quite some time. I'm sure that if you do, I can't tell you that you shouldn't- nobody could tell me....

Take good care of your body for the remainder of the summer! It'll take better care of you!

EXPLANATION OF WHAT A "WALDO" IS...

Waldo is a fictional, cartoon person that has a dozen or so children's books out. Waldo is, almost, always dressed the same and he's "hidden" in a picture filled with hundreds of other things.

Everything's drawn close together and they're extremely BUSY pictures. Children have to "find" Waldo. It's not easy sometimes because the artist tries to make Waldo "blend" in. It's basically a "seek and find" book.

That's the premise of the contest.

Each participating shop has chosen a "Waldo" item. Hidden within the description, of the item, is the phrase "you've found Waldo".

Contestants might have to peruse multiple items, in a shop's "featured" gallery, before they find "Waldo".

The theme for this month's contest is "Back to School". So, the "Waldo" will be an item that falls under that theme.

I have to tell you 10 things about myself and pick 17 different blogs to pass the awards on to. 17!!! Hmmm, looks like alot wont get done today...

I'm very honored that Crystal & Kim chose to pass the awards on to me.

Crystal is the owner of: "Kizz Designs", she makes the most beautiful jewelry you've ever seen. She lives in British Columbia- the pics that I have seen from where she lives are magnificent! She is so sweet and kind- we refer to each other as "WS", (short for web sisters).

Kim, owns Virginia Beach Quilter. Her work is amazing as well- and I'm jealous, (horrible trait). Kim & I have become good friends through our shops as well. She's not afraid to tell you how it is, but underneath that rough exterior, is one of the most kindest women I have ever met. Don't let her in on me telling you... LOL

Here comes the part you've all been waiting for, (like my life is soooo exciting- NOT).

1. My name is Tracy Lea Cornell. My mom & dad finally agreed upon this name because she didn't want a "Veronica" or "Rhonda" as a feminine version of Ron, (my father's name). He didn't care for her choices either- he thought they were way too "out there"... So that's who I turned out to be, nothing sentimental about my name- nothing carried on from generations...

2. Believe it or not, I'm pretty much a quiet and , "stay at home w/hubby" kind of gal. Most people on line feel I am outgoing, (though I suppose I am when it concerns my business).

3. I am the only daughter, and the middle child in my family. I've always had an exuberant imagination- to say the least, perhaps that is where my creativity comes from... Though my mother encouraged creativity, and has taught me more than you could imagine.

4. I am madly in love with my husband- even though we have been married 13 years, and together for 14. I respect and love him with all of my heart, (I can hear Kim gagging in Virginia- all the way here in Houston).

5. I have a deep and great respect for my mother. She is and always has been everything that a mother can, could, should and want to be- and still is to this day. She has earned every ounce of all of my respect.

6. I love to help people, and to make other's happy. It just makes me feel good to do so. If I'm overwhelmed, I may say, "I wish he/she wouldn't ask me to do this, or that, etc.- but in all honesty, I love it.

7. I don't really watch TV, I may have watched 3 half hour shows in the last 5 months- I like to be doing something. I find it difficult to sit and just watch, I prefer interactivity.

8. I came up with the name of my shops: Braggin' Rights, in 2006. At that time, the only item I was selling was quilted photo albums, ("brag books"). The shop has certainly evolved since then!

9. I started my adventure in "e-commerceland" in the last week of March this year. I've met some wonderful people in the process, whom I either socialize with online only- and a few on the phone as well.

I remember thinking that when I started this, that it was going to be soooo much easier than selling my creations offline... LOL, (that's a good one). When you work online, you must wear so many hats! You are the creator of your products, your "PR" gal, your accountant, purchaser, shipping and receiving, website designer, graphics guru, and networking is a must. Sometimes, you get to sleep...

10. And, last, but not least- I love what I do! I love being creative, it thrills me to death. However- when I hear of those with "studios", etc. The fabulous and glamorous rooms like they show Martha Stewart in while she does her "creating"- I think, "Wow, is that what it's supposed to look like???" I share my folding table with the office in our house, my system for storage looks like disorganized clutter- but I do know where everything is. Everything really does have it's own home, and most of their "homes" are labeled. But to the average eye, they would be hard pressed to find anything that they were looking for. I like my "creative space", but I certainly wouldn't classify it as a studio.

By the way, my sewing machine's name is: "Chloe", sentimental? Not really, I like the name. Though I had a great grandmother with that name... I had never met her.

I have insomnia most of the time. So I figured that I will share with you some tips that are said to aid in relieving insomnia, tips that I should be using myself... That's horrible isn't it?

I've heard that if you crush half of a nutmeg, (do not use more than that), and steep it in hot water for 10 minutes, like you would tea; drink it 1/2 hour before bedtime- it is suppose to assist you in going to sleep. If you have a great dislike for the taste of nutmeg, it is said to be as effective topically: take nutmeg oil (available in health food stores), and rub it on your forehead.

Regarding teas, most people know, but I'll state it anyway: chamomile tea is supposed to aid in that also.

Another potion to drink that is supposed to help is drinking a glass of pure, warmed grapefruit juice. If you need it sweetened, (which you probably will, use a bit of raw honey).

Isn't it sad that I just shared with you tips on assisting in going to sleep, all the while, I'm not using them myself for the same condition... it's always easier to tell someone what to do rather than do it yourself....

Ready to start the day'? Earlier in my blog I have discussed a few of the medicinal properties of tea. but don't be concerned if that is not your thing!

I've told you about the coffee grounds and the fire ants quite awhile back. It is also, (the grounds) great for your plants outdoors, it is an organic way to give them a "boost".

However, the properties that I am discussing today will be about the effects that it can have on YOU.

Did you realize that coffee that caffeine is an active ingredient in some pain relievers? Exederin(c) is a good example. So it tends to assist in the relief of headaches- especially those in the tension and migraine category.

Caffeine is also good for suppressing the appetite, which in turn makes it an assistant in the course of weight loss. It releases a hormone called: cholecystokinin that promotes the feeling of "being full". In addition, it increases the metabolism, & promotes efficient fat-burning, (lipolysis). Wow, I'm full of the "$20 words this morning, huh? Must be the coffee I've been drinking!

Another use for caffeine is to use it to fight jet lag. They say if you reduce your caffeine a bit before you know you are going on a trip- then avoid it before your trip, you can take a single 200mg caffeine pill, or go back to you beloved coffee- at least a 1/2 cup immediately upon reaching your destination, Repeating this every 3 hours until you reach your personal comfort point. This will boost your energy, help you stay awake, and shift you into the new time zone efficiently.

So, next time you pass that coffee shop, or even McDonalds (c) nowadays, stop by and grab a "cup of joe"- there are more reasons than pleasure or to wake up in the morning to partake!

Tired of taking antacids!

I'm writing this post specifically because the topic is close at heart to me... (LOL- heartburn). Truly, I am tired of taking antacids, so I am opting for more natural ways in which to combat it. I have Esophagitis, (where your esophagus is ulcerated &/or inflamed), & suffer from frequent heartburn. Diet seems to not have any effect on the condition- I can get heartburn from eating crackers...

So, I thought there may be others out there who may suffer from the same condition, and would like to share some remedies that I've tried- and 1 I have yet to try.

I know that drinking baking soda in a glass of water works- it tastes awful, but sodium bicarbonate is the active ingredient in your typical store-bought antacids, which, in turn- is baking soda. I've used this treatment in desperation, when I was out of Tums (c), or Rolaids (c). It certainly works. As far as amount(s) of water to baking soda, I just added some to my water, maybe a tablespoon or so- I never measured. Typically these moments occurred in the middle of the night...

Another that I've tried and works, (though to this day amazes me), is to drink pure, squeezed lemon juice- the whole lemon. Sounds as though it would GIVE you heartburn, but in all actuality, it does combat it. It changes the pH level of your body, and I can tell you- it is sour! This will not be your "Countrytime Lemonade" (c), this is the real deal! But, if you're like me, you;re pretty much willing to try anything when diet doesn't correct the situation, the doctor's drugs don't work, everything over the counter doesn't help... Eventually, you turn to more natural resources- which is probably where I should have started, not ended up at, (my mother would say, "I told you so", at this point- I can practically hear her now!).

One tip I am trying now is bananas- I love them, they're rich in potassium; they are very good for you, and taste great at the same time! I've heard that bananas relieve recurrent heartburn, as well as heal ulcers...? Who knew? I didn't, so today is my first try with this solution! Wish me luck- this would be my preferred method, mainly due to the taste!

And last but not least: the tip I haven't tried (yet): Tea. I have used herbal teas that have mint in them- they do help, but they don't completely eliminate it for me. The following blend is supposed to be an excellent solution: 2 parts comfrey, 2 parts hollyhock; 1 part chamomile (a gas reliever & anti-inflammatory), and 1 part marigold, (which is also an anti-inflammatory). That specific brew is created especially for esophagitis. I haven't tried it yet, though I've used parts of it in teas. I'm sure some day I will use all ingredients at the same time. I just haven't went to the market specifically in search of all ingredients, which means- I've used what I had at the time of occurrence. Sounds to me as though it would work- I know chamomile and comfrey are great "players" in this tea, though I have yet to drink anything with marigold or hollyhock, (I've grown both in a garden though...).

Anyhow- that is what I have for you today! Wishing you an acid-free day! A peaceful nap. A day completely without acid reflux!

Energize me!

I feel this to be an appropriate topic for today. I arrived home from the hospital yesterday afternoon. Of course, you feel this extreme amount of energy- followed by an all-time low, (like: "who just came by and sucked my energy dry?").

So, I decided to post about some "pick-me-up's".

Modify your environment. This can be done by color, scent, and sound, (or lack thereof).

If you want to boost your energy by way of color: make your creative/workspace clean, and rid it of clutter, then- add yellow orange or red hues in order to stimulate your brain. Yellow is the most energizing- followed by orange, and then red.

Aromatherapy your thing? It is mine- I love smells, (at least good ones). I'm the type that smells my food- I know, strange; but true! I figure if it doesn't smell good- I'm not eating it, (though I suppose I'm big on sight also, because I like "pretty food" too, and dishes, etc). Anyway, if you don't want to use a diffuser or other type of fragrance release method- the natural way to energize yourself is to keep a mint plant on your desk/table, and anytime you begin to feel fatigued- snap a leaf in half and smell it- instant "Bam!". Or you can use a basket of lemons or limes- you will benefit from the color, and the scent of the citrus fruits when sliced.

White noise machines, (the one's that make waterfall, rain,or wind-type sounds), are a good way to block out energy zapping noise in today's world. Another way to eliminate fatigue producing sounds, is to listen to music without lyrics- something that has gentle rhythms: such as a flute or piano.

Hmmm, after writing this post- I feel a little nap coming on...

Poison Ivy: The Not So Friendly Plant

I should really dedicate this post to my brother: Allen: the king of poison ivy- I swear he has had it almost 50 times, he is a poison ivy magnet!

I am going to share one tip for prevention, and one for after you get it- that way you're covered either way!

Preventative measures: this one's a bit limited, but the only one that I've heard: if you are going into areas that may contain poison ivy- and it just so happens to also be green tomato season, (see what I mean...), take some of the green tomatoes with you. The moment that you know that you've gotten poison ivy sap on you, you are supposed to squeeze the juice of the green tomatoes on the areas that came into contact. Does it work? Hmmm.... I have no idea- just heard it. I think I'm immune to the stuff, we had tree forts and played in the woods all the time when I was a kid and I never got it. I must have genetically given all of my portion of the allergy to my brother, ("Love ya' bro"!)

Lets say that you've already became it's victim, (or the green tomatoes didn't work, & you can't wait to take it up with me, once you can stop itching long enough to type me a nasty comment...): they say that if you mash up a full piece of chalk, (white, like used for classroom chalkboards), until it is a powder substance, then mix the powder with a pint of water- apply to the poisoned parts with a clean cloth, repeating as needed throughout the day- that it will actually make the duration of the rash shorter...

Really, if these don't work, it's not my fault- it's all "hearsay"! But I hope they do!

My stubborn brother relies on Benadryl (sp) tablets, he states, "2 days- & it's gone!". I don't know why he wont try anything else, maybe because he took alot of "beatings" from the rash before trying the tablets, and doesn't want to chance another long suffering...

If you try it, let me know how it works, (so I can tell my brother, "I told you so..." If it doesn't work, go for the Benadryl!

Oh Vera....

Not a post about my Aunt Vera, nope....

I'd like to discuss a couple uses for the plant/succulent: Aloe Vera, besides it's wonderful use for wounds and sunburns...

These uses are both for those who suffer with arthritis pain.

Ointments, we like those, right? Just agree, it makes it all much easier... Well, if you want a topical ointment to use to reduce your arthritis pain- take my "Aunt Vera", mix her juices with about a 1/2 teaspoon of Eucalyptus oil (available at alot of health stores), and 1 tablespoon of pure olive oil, take this mesmerizing ointment and slather then massage onto the painful areas. I say mesmerizing, because I just love the smell of eucalyptus, don't you? Maybe you don't- if not, you may not find it as mesmerizing as I do. If that's the case, then you should use my next remedy...

Yummy!?!?

You can always eat the stuff! No, I'm not kidding, you can actually take 1 tablespoon before you eat breakfast, and 1 tablespoon before you eat dinner. Apparently, you are able to treat it from the inside out. I don't think that it would taste the greatest, but for some reason, (maybe because it lacks smell, or as a child this could have been one of many plants that I stuffed into my mouth- yeah, I did things like that; I was a pretty strange, sick child... LOL), I'm thinking it wouldn't have much of a taste. I don't really know, but like I said, either one of the above reasons is my guess for that. You also have the fact that you are using a meal "chaser" to eliminate any unwanted flavor...

What do you think? Did you eat clovers or dandelions as a child? Those two I am certain about eating... I recall the flavors well- that and grass. I seem to recall clover being one of my favorites. I'm still alive and well, so they didn't hurt me- so rest assured, they wont hurt you either... I really shouldn't share this, but my mother claims I used to share Milk Bones with the dog too, her chihuahua would always bring me half, & we'd share- that didn't kill me either, but I'm well over it now. I know, you've seen me in a whole new light, still friends?!?!?

Personal Grooming Techniques...

I'm not about to teach you how to clean yourself, or how to brush your teeth, hair, etc. I am hoping that if you are able to read this- you are already aware of how to do these tasks, right?!?

Today I am going to tell you a couple resolutions for dry elbows & knees. One is to take the skin from half an avocado and rub the inside of it on your elbows &/or knees. Rub continuously for a few minutes; preferably at night time, then wash off just before going to bed. I'm assuming because of the fat/oil of an avocado that is works... Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my guess!

Another resolution for the same situation is to take a grapefruit, cut it in half, and rest your elbows in them, I recommend putting something down in order to catch the messy juice that is obviously going to be seeping out- and don't get all "cocky", and just slam your elbows in- if you really want to do that: close your eyes, and warn bystanders! They say that if you keep your elbows in there for a half hour or longer, that this will smooth out your "lizard -like" condition. I've never tried that one...

One more tip for the day: "painting the town red"... Well, at least your fingertips, (what type of site do you think this is? Like I'm going to offer tips on your social escapades- oh no, that is entirely up to you; I don't get involved there!). After applying you fingernail polish, (it doesn't actually have to be red- it can be purple, green, blue, pink, polka-dotted, or whatever other color you can dream up. Be creative!), you can speed up the drying time, like the "quick set solutions", or "speed dry express" sold at the local drug store or expensive local boutique- without paying the price. Just go to the kitchen pantry, and take out the cooking spray. That's it, it can be "Pam" or generic, & it can be canola or olive oil- none of these factors make a difference, (not even if it's "Pam for the grill"- which, by the way is the same as the other Pam- it just costs more...). Spray this on your fingernails that you have donned the wet fingernail polish onto, & you are now ready to "paint the town red"! Small tidbit of advise: take the cooking spray out of the pantry before you paint your nails! This tip works like a charm- I've used it many times!!!

I had the good fortune of "running across" this shop in a search at ArtFire! The shop combines two of my most favorite things: the vintage/nostalgia theme, and bath products! It doesn't get much better than that, or does it???

The packaging is beautiful, (and quite impressive, to say the least!): the soap arrives in a limited edition, vintage-inspired fabric sack finished with a satin-ribbon. The label unfolds to a reusable craft/sewing pattern that can be used to re-purpose (or “upcycle”) your soap sack into new and useful goods to cherish long after the soap is gone, (the one that I inspected was able to be made into a strawberry pincushion!).

There are also natural soaps shaped by the antique inspired: "penny dolls" that are sold in a glass apothecary jar! Not to mention several different aromatherapy balms, in scents that'll "knock your socks off"!

Great ingredients, brilliant packaging, a variety of "scent"ual pleasures, & the use of recycling as well! Combine these factors, & I believe this is a shop worth watching... Or better yet: shopping at!

Is it a Washroom or a Bathroom?

I guess it all depends on what you'd like to call it... Agreed?
Anyhoooo, I finally feel well enough today to blog- I realize that it's about time! I decided that it calls for the topic having to do with the washroom, and/or things that occupy it's space, (at least in most homes...).

So, you went and got yourself a clogged toilet? It's a horrible thing- isn't it? You'd think by the year 2009 that toilets would be uncloggable, (that's a word, right?!?)! Well, it just so happens that I have a solution for the situation! It's one of my usual non-toxic, safe remedies, (safe for those with septic too!). This one works: if you put dish soap- squirt in about a 1/4 cup of it into the bowl, let it set for about 15 minutes, (you don't have to watch this process, I don't recommend it...). Then, flush, WHAM- just like that, happy toilet once again!

My other remedy for the day is regarding dentures. I don't have them, though I do have some toothless relatives. I kinda like that word: toothless...
Best way to clean them "babies" is to allow them to soak in white vinegar, according to my teeth-lacking cousins- this works much better than any store bought solution, and it's a whole lot less expensive too, (as we all watch our pennies).

I can't believe, that once again- it's night, before bed, & I choose to write another bug post. I evidently must love the insect nightmares... Or that feeling that there's something crawling on you, but its completely "mental". Oh, well, that's what I got, so here goes:

Probably the reason I got to this topic is because this remedy was put into use today, so it's fresh in my head- you try to think household remedies "on demand", sometimes- even though you use them all the time, your mind will just "draw a blank". I've started to write them down in a notebook for future reference as I come across them.

Today when the tomato plants were watered (thanks Mom, for not making me walk across the lumpy, bumpy backyard in crutches while carrying the watering can in my teeth!), we noticed that all the leaves are turning a yellowish brown. We've noticed this gradually happening, but thought that it was just due to the drought that we've been in, or maybe a lack of fertilizer. It was neither. Thanks to my mom's keen eyesight, she noticed that while watering, the leaves appeared to be "moving" (& not because the water was hitting them, give us more credit than that...). Apparently, they were covered with bugs, the exact same colors as the leaves- you know, "camouflaged little creatures". We don't have any idea what type of insect these are- we are usually pretty good at identifying a species, but no such luck this time. Bottom line: they were an insect, and the majority of insects can be repelled (even from food-bearing plants), safely & without toxins. Solution: spray them with soapy water- just a spray bottle filled with dish soap & water! Believe it or not, this will work on at least 89% of the bugs on your plants- probably a higher percentage than that. If you've been to the local hardware store lately, or the greenhouse- you are well aware of how much money I am going to save you in the future!

Another bug "issue", that actually happened a couple times- I've seen it, & thank goodness this has never happened to me! Bugs sometimes fly into people's ears! Why? Haven't a clue, doesn't sound too intelligent does it? (I fly, therefore I am a mobile being- I think I'll fly into this hole with no way through.... duh!)

Anyhow, this has happened to my mother twice! We had no idea of what to do when these events actually occurred, somehow the critters were removed- but it was definitely a struggle to get them out, and scary to say the least!

I've since heard, that if you "point" your ear toward the sun- the bug will just pack it's bags & leave! This is supposed to work because of the fact that bugs are attracted to light.... Makes sense to me!

From now on- any more insect "how-tos" are going to be done on days when I am blogging during daylight hours, rather than right before bed- I'm feeling a bit itchy...

A Little Behind in My Work...

I was going to do photographing for a bath set that I have ready & a pair of earrings I received. I wanted to also finish my next bathing tea gift set: it will be the "Carnivale Collection", (I already have 2 of the 3 bags completed.

However, that was not what was in store for me today. Instead, while doing my laundry, I slipped on the ceramic tile, (there was a wet spot), & now I can't walk without crutches. Hard to get around. I'm not sure if its broke, the ligament twisted or what- but it's exceptionally painful!

So I was immobile, as this occurred immediately after my shower this morning... So, here is what I ended up doing: organizing & labeling beads, ribbon scraps, etc-then, I read alot of the blogs I like online; and I re-opened my ArtFire shop. As you can see there are some references to that on the sides of my blog.

Not exactly what I wanted to complete, but I guess that was what I was supposed to complete? I suppose that just goes to show how 1 thing can change the course of events completely.

Show Me Those "Pearly Whites!"

I know you have a smile in there somewhere....

I have a couple home remedies for teeth. One, I'm not too sure about- it sounds kind of "far fetched", (though there are a couple that I've posted in the past that sounded that way, & I knew they were true- I guess, "Don't knock it till you try it".

Before I start, I would like to add: if there is something wrong going on with your teeth/mouth, see a dentist! Both suggestions that I am sharing today would only be temporary "fixes" until you could get into his/her dreaded dental chair!

The first subject I want to approach is loose teeth. I'm not talking about you being a child, and you should be getting loose teeth- because you are growing up and need new ones anyway...
I'm talking about those of us with our permanent, (think about that a minute- most people don't keep all of them...?) teeth inside our mouths. Supposedly, if your teeth are loose, you can strengthen them with parsley. I've heard from somewhere, that you should take about a quart of boiling water and a cup of parsley- let steep for about 15 minutes- strain, and then refrigerate; therefore creating a yummy concoction of "parsley punch". And here is the fun part: Drink this potion 3 times a day... Your teeth will be strong as a saber tooth tiger! (to me this doesn't make sense because generally the reasoning for the tooth/teeth being loose is below the gums surface, but- who knows...).

My next "tidbit" for the evening is another that is hard for me to convince myself or anyone else to believe in- though I cannot say that something doesn't work if I haven't tried it, alot of things that shouldn't work, DO. Hmmmm...
Pounding, throbbing, horrible toothache, what do you do? This is the point that I told you in the beginning about- see a dentist, you probably have a cavity, (or something worse- get it checked). However, if it is indeed a cavity that is causing you this agony- a simple solution is said to "make it all go away", temporarily. Some say to take powdered milk, and pack it into the cavity- it is supposed to relieve the ache for a bit until you can get to a dentist, (my reasoning for disbelief on this one: the dry milk is gonna get wet, I don't think it's going to stay there, I'm thinking all you'll have is a little, baby, non-fat milkshake, though I could be wrong...).

If you have one of these conditions: try these ideas, let me know how it all works out for you! If you have some suggestions- I love "sharers"- "brownie points" are involved...

I would feel soooo spoiled just using these! They are indulgence in it's finest form... Think about it, someone dried flowers & herbs, hand-stiched, embroidered, & beaded a bath tea bag for my single bath use! The set comes with 3- so there are 3 bathing "experiences" in each set. The thing about these are: nobody needs them, they are the perfect, "You are so special that I think you deserve such luxury" type of item. You'd probably want to be referred to as "Your Highness" afterward...

C'mon Over Here, Honey...

No, I'm not talking sweet to you- well, maybe I am! I am going to give you a tip about honey, that is less known than using it as a sweetener, or that its good for you, etc.

Apparently, honey is good to apply to wounds & minor burns. They claim that if you apply it to the affected area, that it will not only protect it- due to it's thickness, it will do much more. For one thing, it is an excellent antibacterial agent. Honey actually kills germs, (raw honey works better than processed honey). Another thing that honey is good for in this general area, is that it has the ability to lessen inflammation- due to it's antioxidant qualities. So bees do more than help pollinate the beautiful flowers around us & sweeten our tea! I've heard it's good as a preventative agent for cancer also.

While we're on the subject of bees, a thought was brought to mind... I have been stung many times by bees, hornets, wasps- that kind of thing; as a child, we used to play in the fields and woods alot- & like most kids, didn't really watch what we were doing... Anyway, my mom (who, by the way- all the kids in the neighborhood thought was a "witch", due to all of her 'unheard' of potions & brews- I'm not kidding, they were afraid to come over! She even encouraged it by dressing in a witch costume on Halloween when the kids would come to the door... how embarrassing!), used to place either a raw onion (it stunk), or a raw potato to the area that was stung. Not only did it relieve it somewhat- but it actually brought the stinger up, so that it could be taken out. There is something in both of those vegetables that "draws" the stinger to the surface. If you, or someone you know gets stung- I'd recommend the potato method, that's my personal favorite; though you can't go wrong with the stinky onion either: they both do work! I was wondering if they didn't work, would I currently look like a porcupine...? Hmmmm...

I Just Can't Stand to be Bugged!

Today's post is mainly about ants, they truly are an amazing insect- what they can carry, their premonition of the coming season, & inevitable preparation...

But, that's all fine and dandy- as long as it's not on, near, or around me. That's horrible to say, isn't it? It's really not their fault, it's completely about their appearance- they're a bug...

I don't know why something that much smaller than you can make you want to jump on a table to get away from it- even if it's something you know will not bite you. I'm not talking about those fire ants- they will get you. But, the garden variety ants- they just go about their business, aerating your soil and everything, (which reminds me of earthworms, ewww, it's not their fault either)...

Any ways, the point: in order to get ants away from a specific area, you can apply baby powder- this is totally a temporary fix, as they will just move to "another block in their neighborhood", meaning to you and I- perhaps three feet away. They don't like the stuff. If it rains, or is windy, they'll probably move back to their preferred abode, but for awhile- they book. So you're wondering why even bother at all, right? Well, if the molding at the bottom of your door, or the back porch gets them, applying it in the corners in a small area near both sides of the door will keep them from coming into your home. You probably should get that fixed for energy efficiency- but at least you wont have a troop of ants marching through your house!

I heard- and this one- I really don't know about. Not only have I not tried it, but this one came from outside of even my family...
A neighbor, I'm not too sure how good of a source she is, stated that if you poured your coffee grounds outside in your garden/yard/areas of infestation- that it would keep the ants away. She also stated that this did work for fire ants as well. I have fire ant condos in my back yard- this one I really ought to try. I will try to remember, see how it goes for awhile- or if they just relocate, and post again about it at a later date.

This probably wasn't the best post to do as a late night, before bed entry- I feel a little "creepy crawly-like".

Sew Mama Sew Wants to Know...

What types of things do you sew (i.e. quilting, clothing, handbags, home dec projects, etc.)? Handbags, home deco projects, crafts

How much do you sew? How much wear and tear does the machine get? Medium usage

Do you like/love/hate your machine? Are you ambivalent? Passionate? Does she have a name? I really like it, borderlining on love, she makes me happy; & her name is Chloe

What features does your machine have that work well for you? She is computerized, love it- tons of stitches available

Is there anything that drives you nuts about your machine? Filling bobbins... I don't think she cares for them...

Do you have a great story to share about your machine (i.e., Found it under the Christmas tree? Dropped it on the kitchen floor? Sewed your fingernail to your zipper?, Got it from your Great Grandma?, etc.!)? We want to hear it! She almost ran away, I really needed to clean/organize my creative space- she had threatened to move out due to the harsh living conditions.

Would you recommend the machine to others? Why? Yes, very user friendly!

What factors do you think are important to consider when looking for a new machine? Everyone's needs I think are different, eg: I have no desire to tailor clothing, so I don't require the same type of machine that someone who used it for that purpose would, etc.

Do you have a dream machine? I would like one that embroidered as well, I really like the decorative stitches.

Don't Burn Candles in the Microwave...and Such Things as That.

Okay, that's not really what this post is about...

Two separate tips/tricks are involved here. One having to do with the microwave, & one having to do with candle wax- neither at the same time.

The microwave came into mind, as it was put into use in my home today. Have you ever scrubbed, and scrubbed a microwave in order to get it clean? I have- many times; in fact, I believe my mother watched me do it many times, & didn't share her secret until having quite a few years worth of giggles at my expense.

Were you aware, that to clean a microwave, all you have to do is: take 1/2 C of vinegar, 1/2 C of water, put it into a microwave-safe bowl, & put it into the microwave. Allow the microwave to run on high for 5 minutes, don't open the microwave door- allow to set for 10 more minutes... Then simply wipe it clean. That's it wipe, not scrub, wipe...

The other tip I have to share today has to do with candle wax getting on your carpeting. Should this occur- all is not lost! A quick & simple resolution is to take a paper towel- place it on the wax, then, go over it with a warm iron. The wax will adhere to the paper towel, then you throw it away. Pretty simple- eh?

If you know some tips that would be helpful in these situations- tell me! I need to know. Not sharing is as bad as my mother keeping the "how to easily clean the microwave" secret from me! So you really should share!!!

The Situation is Getting a Bit "Hairy" Around Here...

Brewing up some hair tonics today!

I was blessed/cursed with thick hair, (you know, the kind that: "oh you have such beautiful hair" is stated; that is-unless you're the hairdresser giving a "foil" to a person so "blessed"). I've found thick, straight hair to be difficult to manage in certain styles, due to the weight of it- it simply returns to it's comfort zone- which is straight, and "there"- ("there" referring to wherever it so chooses at any given time). This may have something to do with it being past the middle of my back, & without layers- but a gal has to do what a gal has to do: I live in Texas, for the previous 5 years, I've lived in Florida- thick hair must get up & off of the neck area: absolutely mandatory, (my opinion, but I am convinced)!

I am not a big fan of hair products, mainly because this thick straight hair of mine wants to behave like a quilt- no matter how excessively I apply the plethora of "paste it together" products! It is what it is...

Anyway, enough about this head of mine- today we talk tonics: for you!

First bit of information involves the development of the lice population in the classrooms. It is advised, that if you put a tad of tea tree oil in the shampoo that is being used for the head of the child who attends school regularly, (or irregularly...)- that it will keep the lice from forming their habitat on said head. That wasn't meant to rhyme, it just did.

My next tidbit is regarding the residue that shampoo and conditioners leave on the hair. Your hair starts to appear as though, if you were to put any more shampoo upon it- that it would up & grow it's own dispenser! Figuratively speaking, of course. Remedy for the situation: apply vinegar to hair, preferably "white", (though I suppose it doesn't matter), let set a couple minutes- rinse with water; that's it. This will resolve the dullness, & also help to restore the pH balance of your scalp.

This one here is for you "The Hair Product Primping People", you know who you are, I'm not pointing any fingers- heck, I don't even know what most of you look like! Alright, your hair is overcome with so many hair products, that it is not really sure- cannot even navigate via GPS, as to where you would like it to go: Does she want me straight today, scrunched, bunched, curly, whirly, you get the picture. Here is what not to do: spend another $20 or so to get yourself a little bottle of clarifying shampoo, or any other product calling you from the aisle, claiming to work this all out for you. Instead, you can simply, (probably about once a week), take a palm full of baking soda, put some shampoo in with it- create a "paste-like" substance, in which you will proceed to smear throughout your hair. Leave on a minute or so, proceed to rinse thoroughly and BAM- you've been "clarified"! Say hello to your shiny new head! "Gee- your hair looks terrific"...
